Which fibers are plastic?
Find the fiber on your label. Polyester, nylon and acrylic are plastic. Rayon, viscose and modal start as wood and get rebuilt in a chemical bath. Cotton, linen, wool and silk grow that way.
Regenerated cellulose (made from plants, chemically processed)
- ModalNot plastic
Wood pulp, often beech, regenerated through the viscose process
- RayonNot plastic
Plant cellulose, mostly wood pulp, dissolved and regenerated as fiber
- ViscoseNot plastic
Wood pulp (cellulose) dissolved with sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide, then regenerated in an acid bath
Natural, plant
- CottonNatural
Seed hairs of the cotton plant (Gossypium), mostly cellulose
- LinenNatural
Bast fibers from the stem of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum)
